The concerto with winds is a relative disappointment. Lloyd exploits the coloristic potential of this combination well but his melodic invention is not quite up to the first piece. The music meanders and does not seem to know where it is headed and there is a degree of note-spinning.4/5(1).
  5. Daikree says:
As a young man, Lloyd studied violin with the great English violinist Albert Sammons. Writing for the violin came naturally to him. These two concertos are unusual in that No. 1 is written for violin and wind ensemble (woodwinds in threes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets and 2 trombones, with no percussion or strings) and No. 2 is written for violin and.

I hadn't listened to the Fourth Piano Concerto for many years (I own the original L.P.) but the big tune which forms the first movement's second subject had always stayed with me. This concerto, Lloyd says in the booklet which comes with the disc, was intended to be quite different from the first three which had all been "deep, serious works".5/5(2).
